The Haleakalā 2-Day Release, Explained (Exact Time + How to Win It)

If Haleakalā sunrise is sold out for your dates, the 2-day release is your single best chance — and most visitors have never heard of it.

How it works

Sunrise vehicle passes go on sale on recreation.gov 60 days in advance at 7:00 a.m. Hawaii Standard Time, and that batch often sells out in under fifteen minutes. But the park doesn't sell all ~150 passes then. A portion is held back and released exactly two days before each date — again at 7:00 a.m. HST.

So for a Saturday sunrise, the second batch drops Thursday at 7:00 a.m. Hawaii time.

Hawaii doesn't observe daylight saving, so the offset shifts with the mainland's clocks:

1. Create your recreation.gov account the day before. People lose slots fumbling with account creation mid-checkout. 2. Save a payment method in your profile. 3. Load the Haleakalā sunrise page 10 minutes early and log in. 4. At 7:00:00, refresh. If nothing appears, refresh again — inventory sometimes takes a minute to surface. 5. Move fast in checkout. A pass in someone's cart isn't yours yet; complete payment immediately.
