Haleakalā Sunrise Morning-Of Checklist (Times, Gate Rules, Drive)

You got the pass. Now don't blow it on logistics. Here's the whole morning, in order.

The night before

• [ ] Print your reservation (or have it clearly on your phone — paper is safer; the park asks for it on the dashboard)
• [ ] Confirm the ID matches. The person named on the reservation must present photo ID at the gate. No name match, no entry.
• [ ] Fill the gas tank. No fuel in or near the park.
• [ ] Check sunrise time for your date and the park alerts page for closures.
• [ ] Lay out layers (see our what-to-wear guide — it's below freezing with windchill up there).
• [ ] Load the car: water, snacks, blanket, credit card for the entrance fee.

When to leave (rule of thumb)

Arrive at the summit at least 30–45 minutes before sunrise — first light beats sunrise by a half hour and parking lots close as they fill.

The gate opens for sunrise reservation holders at 3:00 a.m. Earlier is better: the four viewpoint lots (Summit, Visitor Center, Kalahaku, Leleiwi) close one by one as they fill, and you're not guaranteed any specific lot.

At the gate

1. Show the reservation + matching photo ID 2. Pay the entrance fee (card) or show your park pass — the $1 sunrise pass does not include entry 3. Put the reservation printout on the dashboard

The drive up

• 10 miles of dark switchbacks from the entrance to the summit — take it slow
• Watch for cyclists, cattle near the lower slopes, and nēnē (Hawaiian geese)
• Coming down: low gear, not brakes — brake fade on this descent is real
