What to Wear for Haleakalā Sunrise (It's Freezing — Literally)

You packed for Maui: swimsuits, slippers, one hoodie "just in case." Then you booked sunrise at 10,023 feet, where pre-dawn temperatures sit in the 30s and 40s°F and windchill regularly dips below freezing. Every single morning, people stand at the summit rail in shorts, shaking through the most beautiful sunrise of their lives.

The layering formula

• Base: long-sleeve shirt (workout gear works)
• Mid: the warmest thing you brought — fleece, hoodie, or two stacked
• Shell: windproof layer. Wind is the real enemy; a rain jacket over a hoodie outperforms a thick sweater alone
• Bottom: long pants; leggings under them if you run cold
• Extremities: beanie, gloves (even cheap ones), real socks and closed shoes — not slippers
• Secret weapon: the beach towel or blanket from your rental. Wrapped around your shoulders at the rail, it's worth more than any jacket you didn't pack

Don't want to buy gear for one morning?

• Many rental condos have a "leave one, take one" stash of jackets from past guests — check the closet.
• Costco/Walmart in Kahului sell cheap fleeces and beanies — you'll pass right by on the drive.
• Sunrise tour companies provide parkas — one more argument for a tour if you couldn't get a vehicle pass anyway.
• Stay in the car between first light phases — locals do. The show runs ~40 minutes; you don't need to stand outside for all of it.

Also bring

• Water and snacks — nothing is sold in the park, and altitude dehydrates you
• A full tank of gas — the climb burns more than you think, and there are no stations in the park
• Your reservation printout + matching photo ID — required at the gate, on the dashboard
• Sunglasses — the moment the sun clears the clouds, it's blinding
